I'm only little over 40 and got belittled and physically punished for using my left hand by a teacher who was still thinking about what using the left hand did to fountain pen ink. Also going to guess that left-handedness would be a lot less accepted in the West without mr. László Bíró and BIC.
Not going to claim that this didn't do other damage to me than learning to use my right hand.
@blackcoat Yeah, a lot of people have been saying that, and I know they’re right. I remember it too, so it wasn’t “ages ago.”
I want to respond to all of them: “Dude, I stole a screenshot of someone else’s post. If I had written it I would have worded it differently. If you have beef, take it up with whoever wrote it.”
But being snarky like that on the internet never gets you anywhere good.
As I wrote something similar to the subject re: "ages ago":
I didn't write it as a personal critique toward you, and I don't think others did either. I think it's important, for personal and societal reasons both, to remember that this wasn't that long ago.
(Also that the ostracism didn't just end: it vanished with fountain pens. As there isn't a technological need to not be trans, this isn't the best parable.)
left handed people might not be explicitly targeted anymore, but there are still alot of things that are inaccessible and inadvertently exclusionary towards them (even if its not intentional-) because of an assumption of right-handedness by default.
